The Craft

Bandhej —
the art of the knot.

Before a single colour appears, an artisan pinches the fabric into thousands of minuscule points and binds each one with thread. Only then is the cloth dyed. Untie the knots and the pattern emerges — dots, diamonds, waves — each one held back from the dye by a hand that has done this ten thousand times.

It is slow, exacting work, passed down through generations in Jamnagar and Ahmedabad. No two pieces are ever identical. That imperfection is the signature — proof that a person, not a machine, made this for you.

The Craft of Bandhej

How Bandhani is made

A single saree can hold tens of thousands of hand-tied knots. Every dot is the mark of a hand, not a machine — a craft carried through generations in Jamnagar and Kutch.

  1. 01

    Prepare & mark

    The raw cloth is washed to remove impurities so the dye takes evenly, then the design is marked out in fine dots as a guide for the artisan.

  2. 02

    Tie the knots (Bandhej)

    Artisans pinch the fabric and tie thousands of tiny knots by hand — often using a pointed fingernail or metal ring. Each knot resists the dye. A single piece can carry 10,000 to 50,000 knots.

  3. 03

    Dye in stages

    The tied fabric is dipped in dye; the knotted points stay untouched, holding the base colour. For layered colour, the tie-and-dye is repeated — lightest shades first, then darker.

  4. 04

    Open the knots

    Once dried, the fabric is pulled along the grain to release every knot, revealing the pattern of undyed dots beneath. Traditionally this last step is left for the customer to do by hand.

  5. 05

    Finished & ready to wear

    This is where we're different. We open every knot, relax and press the fabric, and finish each piece before it ships. Your Bandhani arrives ready to wear — no knots to open, nothing to prepare. Just drape and go.
